Polyphonic Sound Generator ICs

ML2871/72/73/74/63/65 – Pin Compatible Family of Polyphonic Sound Generators

The new pin and software compatible family of highly sophisticated MIDI sound generators are based on a PCM wavetable primarily designed for mobile phones and PDAs, although not exclusively.

They also replay ADPCM/ PCM speech and sound data. Based on a general MIDI sound set, plus traditional Chinese (except ML2872/65) and BRICs (ML2874 only) instruments, the family can cover playback of 16 to 64 polyphonic tones and 8 additional sound effect (ADPCM/PCM) channels.


Using the on-chip FIFOs and 650mW speaker amplifier, a fantastic music ringer subsystem can readily be built around this chip. Also provided are ports to drive a ringing vibrator and LED.


The devices offer both serial and parallel CPU interface and a comprehensive register structure allows easy programming. The chips contain an orchestra of musical instruments, a symphony on silicon.
